I did a Bad Thing

Well, maybe it’s not too bad. When I finished reading Luna, I was so overcome with empathy and emotion, my ability to form coherent, eloquent thoughts was significantly impaired. I had an urge to contact the author, Julie Anne Peters, and share my experience reading her book with her. This is the exchange that followed:

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I spent the entire day reading Luna cover to cover. I’m still crying. The story you share is amazing; it echoes strangely inside me. I need a hug! (I’m sorry, I’m usually much more coherent than is evidenced by this email.) I guess I just don’t quite have an outlet for all that emotion stirred up inside me. What an amazing, encouraging story. When I visit my parents next, I’m bringing my copy of Luna with me, and I’m going to ask them to read it. I hope it will help them understand.

Thank you.

Julie Anne Peters to me

Hi Grey,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write and share your reading experience with LUNA. It’s rewarding to know my work resonates so deeply with you.

I hope the story helps your parents understand. Being transgender is difficult to explain, and trying to express who you really are can be very confusing for your family and friends. Of course, they don’t know the struggle to transition or to live in a societal role that just doesn’t work for you.

Take care, Grey. Spread your wings and fly.

My heart burst. That she’d take time out of her busy day to respond to me floored me. I was a grinning idiot the entire day at work. I still get a little teary when I read it all. Sigh. The world is full of good people. You just have to take time to reach out and find them.
