I realize that a lot of people have come to think of them as non-gendered colloquialisms, but they are still obviously rooted in maleness, and thus I don’t want them attributed to me.

Or mate or lad or any other designator that has a history of association with men.


As a person who uses those three terms a lot I will say that I am *VERY* careful who I use them with. A few friends of mine and I use them a lot to deconstruct how rooted they are in macho culture (I especially use bro a lot with a close friend who is another queer woman). But one should never use it if there’s not an understanding like that, I feel.

^^^ Yes. As a rule, I try to be very careful about how I refer to other people, especially if they’re strangers. And I generally expect the same care in response. But, as I build a trusting relationship with a person, these kinds of rules tend to relax. I guess my insistence on correctly-gendered designators is a sort of defense mechanism when dealing with clueless people. It’s an immediate signifier that gender is important to me, especially my gender. Not to mention that being properly gendered in conversation is a nice validation of my identity.
